Psychology, Philosophy, Politics, and Phlamingos on a Phriday

(about the title: Someone got a little carried away with "p" words;))
When Roo was checking her email a few minutes ago, she saw this headline, and decided that the story was too hilarious to not share. (You have to read the story for the rest of this to make anything like sense).
http://gma.yahoo.com/blogs/abc-blogs/ransom-note-sent-stolen-plastic-flamingos-103250864--abc-news-topstories.html

Discussion questions:
1. Why does one collect and dress forty plastic flamingos?
2. Why does one steal said forty plastic flamingos?
3. Why does one write ransom notes for the forty plastic flamingos that one has stolen?
4. What psychological impulse drives people to buy plastic flamingos? Is it a way of conforming to society, or is it a sign of non-conformity?
5. What is the symbolic significance of the lack of plastic flamingos in A Farewell to Arms?
6. Would Catherine and Henry have realized the error of their ways, thus preventing tragedy, had they been faithful collectors of plastic flamingos?
7. Obviously, Plastic flamingo collecting breeds crime. Does the societal risk of plastic flamingo collecting outweigh a citizen's constitutional right to collect plastic flamingos? Should flamingo collecting be outlawed, and at what level of government (Local, State, Federal, International) should this law be passed?
8. Will this heist affect how you vote in the Presidential Election?

So many questions to ponder, so little time....
Lots of love,
Rosie:)

1. Because one can.

2. Because it seemed like a good idea at the time, presumably.

3. Because if you had stolen 40 pink plastic flamingos, wouldn't you have wanted to try to get something for them?

4. Who knows. Ask the people who buy 40 pink flamingos...

5. That (most) plastics were not widely available at the time when "A Farewell to Arms" was written.

6. Probably not. Those two were a hopeless cause right from the beginning.

7. No. No. N/A.

8. Nope.
